Short walking routes and a natural, intuitive layout make the building easy to use for everyone. A prime example is the teachers’ and community center: centrally located, it serves as the heart of the building.

The building will be user-friendly for athletes and spectators and easily accessible for people with disabilities. Volunteers and gym teachers will also quickly feel at home in the bright and well-organized building. Another unique feature of the design is the sunken position of the sports floor and changing rooms. This reduces the building’s height and blends in well with the green surroundings of De Esrand. At the same time, it will be a focal point at the entrance to Wierden.

The design was enthusiastically received during the presentation to the city council, educational institutions, and associations. The sports hall perfectly meets the needs of users and promises to be a place where athletes, spectators, and volunteers will enjoy spending time.

The sports hall is specifically tailored to its natural location, the Esrand, and designed with careful consideration for its users. The structure, floors, and facade are therefore entirely constructed of wood. With its sunken design, a GPR of 9.06, and an MPG of 0.48, the sports hall is exceptionally sustainable. The sports hall also offers a solution to grid congestion with its own energy generation and storage, combined with an AI-controlled system.

A step towards the future

This contract award marks an important step, and the design phase has begun. The design will be further developed in the coming months. Construction is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026. The sports hall will then be ready for use in January 2027.
